Ryder Cup 2020 - Whistling Straits

The Ryder Cup (like its female counterpart the Solheim Cup) takes place every two years between teams of male golfers from Europe and the USA with the venue switching between courses in the United States and Europe. When it is played, it is one of the major highlights of that years golfing calendar.

Founded in 1927, the competition takes its name from Samuel Ryder, the British businessman who donated the trophy and was originally contested between teams from Great Britain and the United States. Extended dominance by the US team led to the inclusion of other European golfers from 1979. Since this time, the competition has been more evenly balanced with almost an equal number of wins by both teams.

Played over the course of three days between teams of 12 players on a match play basis, the Ryder Cup is always a hotly contested affair with the exuberance of the players matching that of the fans. The selection process, based on merit, for each of the teams, leading up to the tournament, ensures that the worlds current top players are always involved. As well, each team captain’s individual selections ensure that some of the longstanding characters of the sport are not left out.

The partisan atmosphere at these competitions is well-renowned and from a spectator’s point of view it almost feels as if you are part of the team, such is the connection between players and fans. There is no other sporting event that brings these two sides so closely together, making it an event to be witnessed first hand at least once in any one’s lifetime.

SGH Sporting Events will be happy to discuss a travel, accommodation and golf break to take in this biennial event.
